Happy Halloween, Foxie

Foxton, Foxie’s older brother, usually took Foxie trick-or-treating each year. They always enjoyed dressing up and walking through their neighborhood together, knocking on doors to get candy, and waving at their parents who would hang back a few yards in order to keep an eye on the kids while still giving them some freedom. This year, however, Foxton decided he was too old to trick-or-treat. This made Foxie sad because she thought she wasn’t going to be able to get any candy; not to mention the fact that she had already picked out the perfect costume for this Halloween.

In the past, Foxie had dressed up as a ghost, a pumpkin, a princess, and even one year a witch. But this year, Foxie was dead set on dressing up as a crayon. And what color crayon? A yellow crayon, of course! She wanted to be the brightest of them all. As Foxie’s mom was sewing her crayon costume and squabbling with Foxton about his desire to stay home on halloween night, Foxie was feeling nervous.

“What if I have nowhere to go in my wonderful crayon costume?” Foxie asked her mom after Foxton had walked away.

“I can take you and the baby trick-or-treating if Foxton wants to stay home with your father,” her mom was not going to let all this sewing go to waste.

“Thanks, but I wish I could walk with some other kids; having a mom walk with you is kind of embarrassing,” Foxie said, kicking her feet.

“It’s not very safe to trick-or-treat without an adult who loves you nearby, Foxie. I care about you and your safety and I wouldn’t want to risk anything bad happening to you,” Foxie’s mom worried about her children, but wanted to express that the reason she was worried was because she loved them.

“I know, mom, but what if we invited Kittie to walk with me and then you hung back a little like you do when I go with Foxton?” Foxie asked, hopefully.

“That might work, we can call her and her mom in a little bit,” Foxie’s mom said as she began putting the finishing touches on Foxie’s costume.

A few days later, when Halloween night arrived, Foxie’s mom helped her get into her bright, yellow, crayon costume and together with the baby they walked next door to pick up Kittie and her mother. Kittie had decided to be a butterfly for halloween and she even had glow in the dark wings! Foxie was quite impressed with her friend’s costume! Together, the two girls went door to door, knocking and getting candy, for what felt like all night. Kittie’s mom and Foxie’s mom enjoyed each other’s company as they walked a little ways behind and laughed at the girls’ playful antics.

When Foxie arrived home, Foxton immediately tried to raid her trick-or-treating bucket - but Foxie’s mom wouldn’t allow him. Foxie had had so much fun and loved all the compliments she had received on her costume that evening. When Foxie was finally laying in her bed and ready to sleep, her mom came into the room to tuck her in. As she drifted off to sleep, Foxie’s mom whispered into her ear, “Happy Halloween, Foxie.”
